Wendy Rowberry

I am a mixed media artist and educator based in Lancashire, UK.

My artwork is inspired by aerial views of special places.  I use colour and mark-making to express my memories and feelings about those places.

I have 16 years experience working in mainstream education and host bespoke workshops for children and adults with and without disabilities.

Wendy studied Textiles/Fashion (Embroidery), BA (Hons)at Manchester Metropolitan University, graduating in 1994.  She has always had a fascination for maps and places and spent the following 6 years exploring various parts of Eastern Europe. In 2000, she was awarded a teaching certificate from M.M.U. and went on to teach Art & Design in mainstream high schools for the next 15 years whilst raising her family.  Wendy now combines selling her artwork and designs with her role as Artist-in-Residence at MyLife Legacy, Standish, UK.

"I have a fascination for maps, particularly how humans shape their habitat and landscape over time. Maps contain memories, dreams and tell stories. These elements are often hidden and sometimes become distorted. Maps are able to portray harmonious relationships between human beings and their environment, but can also demonstrate how human self will can run riot.    My artwork focuses on the shapes people make and how those shapes become maps. Maps are pictures; by adding, removing or changing a road or a path or a tree, humans are able to change the composition of these pictures. I use colour and marks and line to express my emotional response to a particular place or space. When I create a picture I am mentally "within the map".  Artwork is created using mixed media collage techniques.

Charlie's Garden

"Charlie's Garden is a magical place where I was able to find solitude and solace.  It is a place full of beauty and somewhere I felt safe and connected to the world.  I used to go there daily, but not so much now.  I can still visit  at any time of day through my thoughts and memories which anchor me and offer me peace".

Wendy's recent expedition to Mount Toubkal in Morocco has resulted in a remarkable new set of work inspired by the sights, colours and experiences of her trip.
